OmniLynx, the new unlimited data plan on the Verizon network that sounded too good to be true, seems to have reached its limits.
Since about September 12, the devices have been on 'back order' according their ordering website.
This morning, customers who had pending backordered devices got the following e-mail:
The wireless provider previously servicing the OmniLynx Program has recently expressed an inability or unwillingness to continue supporting the program. As a result ,and regrettably, we will be unable to accommodate your recent order. Within the next 48 hours, you should receive a full refund of your initial payment. This refund will be transacted through the PayPal portal. We are exploring alternatives for the continuation of the OmniLynx Program and will notify you immediately upon resolution to this issue. Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding in this matter.
Sounds like Verizon has clearly put a stop to OmniLynx selling to the general public, and the particular attention the plan got when they opened up their referral program which put them on the RV community's radar.
But what about those customers who already received their orders?
We just called OmniLynx and spoke to Jacob, and they confirm that for now - current customers are 'good to go' and service will continue as usual.
According to their order page.. their current official statement is:
"At this time existing customers will not be affected by this change in supply."
Any who signed up for autopay, will be billed on the anniversary of their order date. Those who didn't sign up for autopay will receive an e-mail a couple days before their date with a link to make their payment.
However no new orders will be accepted, and unfilled orders will be refunded and not shipped.
We also reinforce our caveat that any current OmniLynx customers not get too comfortable with their plan. While they may be continuing service for now, there's no promise of how long that might last. Notice the wording above ... "At this time" (bolding ours).
Remember, this service was specifically offered on a no-contract basis with clear terms of service that they have the right to throttle or terminate at anytime.
Meanwhile OmniLynx is in discussions with Verizon to come to an agreement to continue service, and is opening up discussions with other potential carriers.
Missed out on this unlimited data option? What are your other options?
Truly unlimited data that can be used as a mobile hotspot is a rare commodity. You can still get a grandfathered in truly unlimited plan direct with Verizon. The costs are about $45-200/month, depending if you go with a rental plan or AOL (assumption of liability).
