Key Points:
- Orbic Speed Mobile Hotspot is a new hotspot offered for and through Verizon
- Covers bands 2, 4, 5, 13, 66 as well as offering simultaneous dual 2.4GHz & 5GHz Wi-Fi
- Available directly through Verizon and Verizon Prepaid
The Orbic Speed Mobile Hotspot was recently found available on Verizon's postpaid and prepaid websites.
The Orbic Speed is an entry-level LTE hotspot device, with a Category-4 modem and support for simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. It's made under the brand name Orbic owned by Reliance Communications LLC.
The device is lacking some critical features for those interested in a solid mobile internet device - such as antenna ports for additional signal enhancing options.
And while the device does cover the key Verizon LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 13 and 66, it is lacking additional bands for maximum Verizon compatibility(12, 14, 30, 29, 46).
The Orbic offers 3G fallback, which, at this point, is more of a 'meh' than a 'yay'. Verizon is actively working to shut down 3G by end of year. You can read more about 3G shutdowns in our recent news story: 3G Shutdown Update: Carriers Sunsetting 3G to Make Room for 5G
Compared to Verizon's other entry-level device the Ellipsis MHS900L, the Orbic Speed is a definite step up with dual-band Wi-Fi, more frequency bands, 3G Fallback, and a Category 4 versus a Category 3 modem. We do not know if the Ellipsis will be replaced by the Orbic. For those seeking a maximum LTE hotspot for Verizon's network, the 8800L remains the flagship LTE device.
Verizon Wireless customers can purchase the Orbic Speed for $99.99 for use with one of their data only plans or to be added as a line on an Unlimited (15GB of high-speed mobile hotspot use) plan.
