Peplink launched a new variant of its entry-level MAX BR1 Mini 5G router, the MAX BR1 Mini 5G (with Wi-Fi).
The Original Mini 5G, which is still available, did not come with Wi-Fi capability at all. The new variant adds Wi-Fi 5 support for wireless LAN networking and, with a PrimeCare subscription or optional add-on license, the ability to use Wi-Fi as WAN.
All other specifications of the new model are the same as the non-Wi-Fi Mini 5G.
The new model only supports Wi-Fi 5, but as an entry-level router with an internal performance limit of 300Mbps, Wi-Fi 5 is not surprising or a performance concern.
At $549, the Wi-Fi model is $50 more expensive than the non-Wi-Fi version. For most mobile users living, working, or traveling in a van, boat, or RV, an extra $50 is probably worth getting integrated Wi-Fi capability.
However, those looking for a Peplink 5G router should carefully consider the downsides of the BR1 Mini 5G series, especially compared to the B One 5G, which offers much more performance and capability for only $50 more than this new Wi-Fi version.
