Peplink has quietly rolled out an unannounced change to its dual-modem LTE router, the Max Transit Duo Pro. Until now, this router offered a modern Cat-7 modem and an older Cat-12 modem that balances carrier compatibility and performance. The Cat-7 modem supports cellular bands lacking in the Cat-12, such as T-Mobile's critical Band 71.
Now, however, Peplink has changed this model to utilize updated dual Cat-12 modems. The modems are a more modern design that supports all the LTE bands for North America, including newer cellular bands like Band 71 and global bands. However, both modems remain mid-performance LTE modems utilizing only 2x2 MIMO antenna support, which has limited appeal in a 5G world.
This change also comes with a $200 price increase from $999 to $1199.
The Cat-7/Cat-12 Duo was always a compromise because the modems had different performance characteristics and supported different bands. For example, if you had a T-Mobile plan, you'd always want to use the Cat-7 modem because it better supports T-Mobile's network. With the upgraded Cat-12 modems in the new version, those compromises and limitations are gone, but the downside is a non-trivial price increase.
Here are the LTE bands supported by the new Cat-12 modem:
- B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B13, B14, B17, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28, B29, B30, B38, B39, B40, B41, B42, B43, B48, B66, B71
The new version is already available at most Peplink vendors, and the Cat-7/12 model has been discontinued. If you're looking for a Duo Pro and are interested in the Cat-7/12 model at the $999 price, act fast while vendors still have stock.
Key Mobile Internet Related Considerations:
- The MAX Transit Duo will now come with dual Cat-12 modems instead of 1x Cat-7 and 1x Cat-12.
- The updated router's dual Cat-12 modems are more modern and, unlike older Cat-12 modems, support the LTE bands for all carriers in North America as well as global bands.
- With the modem update, the price increases by $200 from $999 to $1199.
