Today, Peplink officially released an updated version of the dual-modem MAX BR2 Pro 5G router.
The new router is the same as the previous BR2 Pro 5G except for updated modems. The new version comes with two X65 cellular modems, replacing the X62 modems on the previous model. The price will remain the same at $2,899.
As noted in our recent cellular industry update, the X62 is designed to have lower peak performance and lower cost than the X65, but in most other respects, they are the same.
The X65 has higher peak theoretical performance than the X62 (4.1 Gbps for the X65 compared to 3.4 Gbps for the X62 on sub-6 GHz 5G based on the module performance), but real-world performance will depend on many more factors than the modem's peak theoretical capabilities. In particular, taking full advantage of the X65's performance advantage will require connecting to a tower and carrier that can support the additional 5G carrier aggregation the X65 supports.
So, upgrading is probably not worth it for those who already have the X62 BR2 Pro 5G, but those considering a BR2 Pro 5G should ensure they get the X65 model.
Note: The model number for the X65 version is: MAX-BR2-PRO-5GK-T-PRM (5GK as opposed to 5GN for the X62). The X62 will still be in distribution channels until inventory runs out, so carefully look at the model number to ensure you purchase the correct one.
This is the second Peplink cellular router to get the upgraded X65 modem, and we expect others to follow this year, such as the single modem BR1 Pro 5G.
We are receiving an evaluation unit of the new BR2 Pro X65 model and will compare its performance to the BR2 Pro X62 model. Our members will have access to our testing notes in our member forums and our updated review, once our evaluation is complete.
