Starlink has added a tilt option in the Starlink app for the Gen 2 Standard Actuated dish to lay flat, per the user's request. The app even mentions that this is best to use if your Starlink is powered on while in motion.
This is an interesting move from Starlink since the Gen 2 Standard Actuated dish was never officially designed or approved for in-motion use. However, since Starlink does allow in-motion up to 10 MPH on the mobile plans without needing Mobile Priority Data, this is a very welcome change for some users.
Over the years, modifying the Gen 2 dish to disable the motors has become common, so the dish can be mounted flat for various reasons and applications.
This has become particularly popular in the boating community when swinging at anchor since the dish can easily point in the wrong direction as the boat swings around. If the dish attempts to realign automatically, service is often disrupted.
By disabling the motors and making the dish flat, boaters have found their service is much more reliable when at anchor or moving along in the water.
RVers who permanently mount their Starlink to their RV will also appreciate this change, as the dish can point straight up and work in any direction.
Some RV users have also suggested that if they find themselves in areas with trees around, pointing the dish straight up has helped them to have more reliable service even though the actual antenna aiming is done electronically.
Since Starlink made this feature available through a software update in their app, many Standard Actuated users won't need to consider modifying their hardware (which voids any warranty) or getting a dish going forward if all they want is to be able to mount their dish flat.
Either way, it's sure to be a popular option for people to experiment with now since no modification to the hardware is required to test it out or change it back to automatic.
Key Mobile Internet Related Considerations:
- Starlink has added the ability to tilt the Gen 2 flat through the app, giving the user full control if they want the dish to tilt or lay flat without modification to the hardware
- Starlink says this is best to use if your Starlink is powered on while in motion
- Boaters and RVers will both appreciate this change when tilting isn't optimal in certain situations
