Yesterday, T-Mobile sent notices to thousands of customers, primarily those on older plans, announcing $2 or $5 per-line price increases.
T-Mobile has not published a comprehensive list of which plans and lines are affected, but based on reports we've collected so far, many customers with the following plans/lines of service received notices:
- Magenta Plans, including 55+
- ONE plans
- Simple Choice - both phone and data plans
- Wearable lines on various plans, including even new Go5G plans
Generally, price increases are $5 per line for smartphone plans and $2 for data-only plans. So far, we haven't seen reports of increases in popular data plans for our audience, such as the 50GB and 100GB mobile internet plans for hotspots and routers, and Home and Business internet plans. The data plan line increases are primarily wearables (watch) lines and old Simple Choice data plans.
Not every line on these legacy plans is increasing - only lines for some customers.
The notifications include a link to T-Mobile help pages (one for voice lines, one for data lines) with more information explaining that the change is because of inflation and encouraging customers to upgrade to newer plans.
The increases go into effect with a customer's first bill after June 5th. Customers will not be able to see which specific lines are affected on their accounts until that bill, but they can call T-Mobile, chat with T-Force, or talk to a representative in a store to find out.
T-Mobile has signaled for months its desire to transition customers to newer plans, and late last year, it had plans for forced migrations, so price increases were not unexpected.
Along with this change to existing line pricing, T-Mobile also increased the price of Go5G 55+ plans for new customers by $5/month beginning May 23rd. The pricing for Essentials 55+ options did not change.
