Verizon sent out notices to customers of many types of retired smartphone plans that their autopay discount would be cut in half from $10/month per line to $5/month per line. Part of the notice states:
While we continue to offer Auto Pay benefits, your $10/line discount will be reduced to $5/mo. and your bill will increase starting on or after 10.10.2024. However, your current plan price and benefits will remain unchanged. You also have the option of moving to myPlan, where you’ll receive an Auto Pay discount of $10/mo for every line you switch.
The notices sent to customers state that changing to a current myPlan option would retain the $10/month discount.
This is a list of affected plans that we know about so far:
- Play More Unlimited, Do More Unlimited, Get More Unlimited
- Play More Unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband, Do More Unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband, Get More Unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband
- 5G Start, 5G Play More, 5G Do More, 5G Get More
- Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, Above Unlimited
- 55+ Unlimited Plan, New Verizon Plan Unlimited
Note that we have not yet seen indications that the 2011-era gUDP is affected, and so far, it seems that standalone data-only and prepaid plans are also not affected. However, data and tablet add-on lines to one of the above smartphone plans will likely be affected.
This is in addition to Verizon increasing prices on some of these legacy plans this past January and July 2023.
Verizon wants to move customers off of legacy plans and onto the current myPlan lineup, and price increases are one method Verizon is employing to accomplish that.
Those with many lines on an account will feel the lowered discount most acutely. Affected customers will need to run the numbers for their accounts to determine whether it's worth it to stay with the legacy plan, upgrade to a current Verizon plan, or switch carriers.
Key Mobile Internet Related Considerations:
- The price of many legacy plans will effectively increase by $5/month.
- Verizon is reducing the autopay benefit from these plans to entice customers to change to current plans.
- Although not confirmed, this change does not appear to affect standalone data-only plans.
