Verizon Launches New Postpaid Data Only Plans – Up To 150GB for $80/month

At long last, Verizon postpaid has rolled out new data-only plans. AT&T and T-Mobile introduced some beefy data plans in the last few months, while Verizon's plans remained less competitive... until now.

We expected Verizon to make some changes in their data plan offerings, and have been eagerly awaiting an announcement. Today that moment has finally arrived, and we're pleased to see that some of the plans being rolled out are heavy on data.

New Data Plans Details

There are four new plans available through Verizon Postpaid as of today - Premium, Pro, Plus, and Essential. 

These news plan features 5G Nationwide, and 4G LTE data access, and all but the Essentials plan also includes Verizon's ultra fast 5G Ultra Wideband (UW) coverage.

The difference on each plan is the data cap, and once that capped is reach speeds are hard throttled down. When on 5G UW, speeds will be at 3 Mbps, and when on LTE or 5G Nationwide speeds will be at 600 kbps. 

Video streaming on all plans is at 4K when in 5G UW, and 720p when on LTE or 5G Nationwide. 

None of the plans appear to be eligible for additional autopay discount pricing.  If you run out of mobile hotspot data during your billing cycle on one of these new plans, you can add a Data Boost, which gives an extra 5GB of 5G Nationwide/4G LTE data for $35. 

Premium Data Plan

150GB for $80 add-on or $110 standalone 

Verizon's new top-tier plan is called Premium and it offers 150GB of premium data for $80/month when added to Verizon's current unlimited postpaid smartphone plans, and is not eligible for the 50% device discount when added to a Do More or Get More phone line.

This plan is also available as a standalone line for $110/month with no other qualifying lines of service. 

Pro Data Plan

100GB for $60 add-on or $90 standalone

The Pro Plan comes with 100GB of premium data for $60/month when added to Verizon's current unlimited postpaid smartphone plans, and is not eligible for the 50% device discount when added to a Do More or Get More phone line.

This plan is also available as a standalone line for $90/month with no other qualifying lines of service. 

Plus Data Plan

50GB for $40 add-on or $20 with Do More/Get More Discount

The Plus Plan provides 50GB for $40/month when added to an account with Start Unlimited or Play More phone lines. For accounts with Do More or Get More phone plans, a 50% off discount is applied to the Plus data only line, bringing the price to $20/month for 50GB of data. 

This plan is not available as a standalone line. 

Essential Data Plan

15GB for $20 add-on or $10 with Do More/Get More Discount

The Essential plan is 15GB for $20/month when added to an account with Start Unlimited or Play More phone lines. For accounts with Do More or Get More phone plans, a 50% off discount is applied to the Essential data-only line, bringing the price to $10/month for 15GB of data. 

This plan is not available as a standalone line.

Device Compatibility

These plans are made for use in data devices including hotspots and routers. You can purchase a hotspot from Verizon, where the current flagships are the Inseego MiFi M2100 5G Ultra-Wideband and Inseego 8800L (LTE), or you can bring your unlocked compatible hotspot or router.

We ran some IMEI checks with our test routers to see if they were supported, and our Pepwave Max Transit Duo came up as a valid device.

The MAX Transit 5G did not come up as a valid device, but that device just may not be in their system as it is a newer device - a SIM card from one of these plans in this device would likely work.

Summary

These new plans, particularly the Premium Plan with 150GB of data for $80 add-on or $110 standalone, brings Verizon back into a competitive space with the other major providers in terms of data-only plan offerings. These new data-only plans are a big step forward over their previous data-only options. 

While not the cheapest big bucket data plans currently on the market, the pricing is still reasonable.

A quick comparison of the current biggest bucket data-only options across the major carriers shows that T-Mobile remains the cheapest per GB option. However, if you're adding on a Verizon 150GB plan to an existing account or heading over to AT& prepaid for their 100GB plan - the pricing is only a few cents of difference per GB:

• T-Mobile 100GB for $50/mo = 50 cents/GB
• Verizon add-on 150GB for $80/month = 53 cents/GB
• AT&T Prepaid 100GB for $55/month = 55 cents/GB
• Verizon standalone 150GB for $110/month = 73 cents/GB
